How to assess your building's energy efficiency?
June 1, 2023
It is actually not as complicated as it might seem. You need data on the heat energy consumed during the heating season and the building's area in square meters. Heat energy consumption is recorded in MWh or kWh.

It is actually not as complicated as it might seem. You need data on the heat energy consumed during the heating season and the building's area in square meters. Heat energy consumption is recorded in MWh or kWh. All you need to do is divide the total annual heat energy consumption by the building's area. The resulting characteristic of the building is the key indicator. For any office building, unless the building is completely uninsulated and with damaged windows, this number should not exceed 100 kWh/m2. If the building was constructed in the last 10 years and has been designed with energy efficiency in mind – insulated walls, quality window packages with selective coating – then this number should not exceed 60 kWh/m2.

Unless the building has a "hole" where heat is being lost to the air, the cause will be overheating of the building. If the building is small, smart thermostats available in stores can be used, but if the building is large, such devices need to be remotely manageable, which will not be possible with regular smart thermostats due to the large area and number of devices. For this reason, we have developed a solution tailored for large buildings – MESH BMS. Ask your manager if they know about MESH BMS and whether representatives from MESH have provided their calculations for the possible reduction in heat consumption in your building!
